Tom McConnell serves as Captain of the Special Operations Division for the Greenville County Sherriff’s Office in Greenville, South Carolina. Tom has over 25 years of experience conducting threat assessments, post-incident triage, and defensive training in a variety of environments.
Tom has conducted threat assessments for a variety of situations, including Presidential and Vice Presidential visits. In this capacity, he has conducted route planning, site assessments, and served as a liaison for various protective units including the Secret Service. He has also served as a counterassault detail and personal protection for dignitary visits.
Tom teaches combat casualty care and hostage rescue, and has hands-on experience utilizing that knowledge in the field. He serves as the Commander of the SWAT Team. He was a founding member of the Maritime Operations team and Dignitary Protection team for the Greenville County Sherriff’s Office. In these roles, Tom has actively provided combat care.
Tom oversees the training of over 6,000 students annually including local, state, and federal law enforcement as well as defensive tactics for both law enforcement and civilians. Tom serves as a ground defense instructor and also teaches basic SWAT courses, close quarter combat, and firearms instruction.
In addition, Tom is also certified to conduct operations in high-risk environments involving chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons of mass destruction. Tom has served as a sniper, and conducted surveillance and counter-surveillance operations and has been recognized for his exemplary service as a recipient of the Distinguished Service award and the Medal of Valor.
